How to choose light

Lighting has a major impact on the impression of a space.
Depending on the color and spread of the light and the shape of the fixture, the atmosphere of the room can be changed to be soft or dignified.

Time to gather around the dining room for a meal.
A relaxing night on the sofa.
A soft light welcomes you at the entrance.

Rethink your existing ceiling lighting.
Or stack several lights.

Either way, it will make a big difference in how you perceive the space.

From the idea of "ensuring brightness" to the perspective of "what kind of light do you want to spend your time in?"

Choose lighting that suits your lifestyle and the purpose of your room.
It may just be about making a little more time each day.

To that end, here are some basics first.

Installing ceiling lights

When installing a pendant light or ceiling light that is compatible with a hook ceiling, the first thing you need to check is whether the wiring device (hook ceiling) below is installed on the ceiling.

A hook ceiling is a wiring device that serves as the base for attaching ceiling lights. If this is installed, you can install it.
*If there is no hook ceiling, electrical work will be required.

Also, if a duct rail (lighting rail) is installed, installation is possible by using a separate duct rail plug.
One of the features of duct lighting is that it can be used to hang multiple lights.

Please check the wiring fixtures on your ceiling before purchasing.

Please also refer to the video below for instructions on how to install ceiling lighting on a hook ceiling.

*The video shows how to install the "Atelier Pendant Light."

About light bulbs

Generally, you can use incandescent, fluorescent, or LED light bulbs.
When replacing your battery, please check the following points:

Types of nozzles

The base is the metal part at the base of the light bulb.
Screw this part into the socket to install it.

If you use a bulb that does not fit,
・It may not light up, the bulb may malfunction, or it may cause an accident due to short circuit or overheating, which is very dangerous. Please be sure to check the size.

There are two types of nozzles available in our store.

E26: A common size. Many light bulbs sold at electronics retail stores are of this standard.

E17: A narrow base. Used for mini krypton bulbs and chandelier bulbs.

Be careful when installing the light bulb

  • Be sure to select the same nozzle size
  • The most common type is the "screw-in type (E)." There are also various other types, such as the "plug-in type (G)," depending on the bulb, so please make sure you do not make a mistake.
  • The number after the letter indicates the diameter of the nozzle (mm).

Bulb size guide

If you absolutely cannot figure out the nozzle size, one way to figure it out is to measure the thickness of your finger.
Be sure to remove the lighting from the wiring device and check that there is no electricity flowing.

E26 = thumb size

E17 = middle finger size

*Please use this as a reference only as there may be individual differences.

Room size and brightness

The way light spreads will vary depending on the type of lighting and the shape of the shade.
The required brightness will vary depending on the application, but the following is a guideline:

Tips for when you're confused about brightness

It is generally said that the brightness required for one tatami mat is about 40W.

40W x number of tatami mats in the room = required wattage

example)
8 tatami mats → 40W x 8 = 320W
10 tatami mats → 40W x 10 = 400W
*For LED bulbs, please check the "lumens (lm)" display instead of the power consumption.

Although one light can provide all the brightness, combining multiple lights can create a room with a wonderful atmosphere. Changing the position of the lights will give the room a different look.

Cord length and installation height

The impression of a space can change dramatically depending on the length of the cord of a pendant light.
For a typical ceiling height (approximately 240 cm), the way the light spreads and the balance will be different if the cord is 50 cm or 1 m.

*This is a comparison assuming a ceiling height of approximately 240 cm and hanging with a 50 cm and 1 m cord.

The lower the light, the brighter your hands will be and the more calm the space will appear.
Installing it higher will help spread the light more easily, making the entire space softer and brighter.

Installation height guideline

  • For a dining table, we recommend placing the bulb about 60cm above the table. This will provide light for your hands while creating a pleasant shadow.
  • In the kitchen, placing the light about 60cm below the ceiling will provide bright illumination for the work surface.
  • In spaces such as bathrooms and entryways, installing the lamp slightly higher will help diffuse the light more widely.

Adjust the height to suit the purpose of the space.
